Six people, among them three children, lost their lives when a passenger helicopter went down in the Hudson River. The victims included the pilot and a family from Spain, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed. U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the heartbreaking incident in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“Terrible helicopter crash in the Hudson River. It looks like six people, the pilot, two adults, and three children, are no longer with us. The footage of the accident is horrendous. God bless the families and friends of the victims. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and his talented staff are on it. Announcements as to exactly what took place and how will be made shortly!" President Trump shared a post on Truth Social.
Among those who lost their lives were Agustín Escobar, the president and CEO of Siemens in Spain, along with his wife and their three children. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that four people died at the scene, while two others were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The crash happened at 3:17 p.m. local time when authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a helicopter accident in the Hudson River near Pier A Park in Hoboken, New Jersey.
When emergency crews reached the scene, police rescued four people from the water while the FDNY pulled out two others, according to Tisch. Videos of the crash have since gone viral on X, showing dramatic footage of the helicopter spinning in the air before it went down.
“Our hearts go out to the family of those who were on board," Adams expressed. FlightRadar24 has identified the crashed helicopter as a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV. Records from the Federal Aviation Administration show it was built in 2004 and received its airworthiness certificate in 2016. “A Bell 206 helicopter crashed and is submerged in the Hudson River in New York City," according to a statement from the FAA.
