At least seven Maoist insurgents were killed during an armed clash with security personnel in Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh. The bodies of seven Maoist insurgents, which included two female members, were discovered after an intense gun battle with security forces in Kanker district.
A huge quantity of weaponry, ammunition, and explosives, including AK-47 rifles, were also seized from the location of the confrontation.
The confrontation unfolded in the jungles of Abujhmad, situated on the volatile Narayanpur-Kanker border, where the Directorate General of Reserve Police (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) personnel exchanged gunfire with suspected Maoists on Tuesday morning.
Sunderaj P, Inspector General of Police, Bastar range, said that the encounter took place at around 6 am in the forest between Tekmeta and Kaakur villages in Abhujmad forest.
“A joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Naxal operation on Monday night after specific input from senior Maoists in the forest. As soon as they reached Kankur village, the exchange of fire started. After the exchange of fire stopped, bodies of seven Maoists, including two women, were recovered from the spot,” the IG said.
The IG further said that an AK-47 rifle and a cache of other weapons and explosives were also seized from the spot.
“We have launched a search operation and the identity of the Maoists is yet to be ascertained,” said the IG.
“All seven bodies have been recovered, and identification is underway," officials added.
This is the second major strike on Naxalites by security forces in 15 days.
This incident brings the tally of Naxal insurgents killed this year to 88, in various clashes with security forces in the Bastar region of the state. The Bastar region comprises seven districts, including Narayanpur and Kanker, according to the police.
"The encounter between personnel from the DRG and STF and Naxalites is underway in Abujhmad of Narayanpur-Kanker border area since this morning," a police officer earlier told ANI.
The operation occurred just days after a fierce encounter in which 29 Maoist insurgents were killed by security forces. Notably, among the casualties were senior Maoist leaders Shankar Rao and Lalita Meravi, both of whom had bounties of ₹8 lakh placed on their heads.
