On Monday, police reported that security forces had destroyed four illegal bunkers used by gunmen, while they took control of the remaining three bunkers to strengthen security in Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts of Manipur.
According to the police statement, the bunkers were destroyed during extensive operations over the past two days in a number of regions abutting Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi villages, where gunfights broke out following attacks on the low-lying villages by nearby hills-based gunmen.
"All armed miscreants involved in recent firing incidents at Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi have been flushed out. Four illegal bunkers have been destroyed while three other bunkers have been occupied by security forces both in the valley and dominating hill areas," it said. A joint team of the army, BSF, and CRPF took control of key areas in Uyok Ching in Kangpokpi district. On December 27, four people, including police officers and a woman, were injured in gun attacks in Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi villages.
Armed gunmen from nearby hills in Kangpokpi district opened fire on the low-lying Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi villages, leading to a gunfight with security forces and local volunteers. Since May 2023, ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur has resulted in over 250 fatalities and thousands of displaced people.
