A major search operation was launched at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport earlier today after India tipped off Sri Lankan authorities about six individuals allegedly involved in the Pahalgam terror attack. These suspects were reported to have arrived in Sri Lanka on a flight from Chennai.
The SriLankan Airlines flight UL122, which landed at 11:59 AM, underwent a thorough security check. According to a police spokesperson, Indian authorities had alerted them about the presence of the six suspects on this particular flight. The suspects are believed to have travelled to Colombo via this airline. Local reports indicate that the Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Air Force, and airport security teams carried out a joint search operation, but no suspect was found. Sri Lankan Airlines confirmed that it had received an alert from the Chennai Area Control Centre. Once the flight arrived in Chennai, the aircraft was thoroughly inspected and cleared for further operations.
In another incident, on April 22, terrorists with suspected links to Pakistan attacked the scenic Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 26 civilians, including a Nepalese tourist and a pony ride operator. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation into the attack. India has taken quick action against Pakistan by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, which means India can stop or redirect water from the Indus River system that normally flows to Pakistan, impacting a major water source for the country.
India has also imposed a ban on imports and shipments from Pakistan, and Pakistani ships are no longer allowed to dock at Indian ports. Furthermore, India has cancelled visas for Pakistani nationals, giving them until Tuesday to leave the country. In retaliation, Pakistan has threatened to end all agreements with India, including the Simla agreement. Both countries have closed the Wagah-Attari border crossing and downgraded their diplomatic relations.
