A Sealdah court on Friday declared Sanjay Roy guilty in the rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. This incident had caused widespread anger across the country last year.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigated the case, which entailed the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9 in the hospital's lecture room. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, was accused of rape and murder. This case sparked widespread protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, who demanded justice and better security in government hospitals. The victim's father shared hope for a fair judgment, emphasising the family's unwavering efforts to seek justice.
Following the case's transfer from the Calcutta High Court to the CBI, the latter filed a chargesheet exposing financial violations at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Afsar Ali Khan, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, and former principal Sandip Ghosh were among the individuals identified in the chargesheet. The chargesheet also accused Sandip Ghosh of financial misconduct, and he was questioned in connection with the rape and murder case. The CBI's investigation included polygraph tests. Due to delays in filing the chargesheet, some of the accused, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, were granted bail. The in-camera trial for the rape and murder case started on November 12.
The CBI asked for Sanjay Roy to be executed at the end of the trial. The court in Sealdah declared that the ruling would be handed down on January 18. Before the verdict, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh repeated the party's demand for the death penalty for the accused. He highlighted the quick action taken by the police and the CBI’s confirmation of the accused's guilt. Ghosh supported the Chief Minister's call for capital punishment, stressing the seriousness of the crime and its impact on public opinion and political discussions.
