Sandeshkhali: A Classic Case of Illegal Migrant Appeasement to Cultivate Dedicated Vote Bank Part 2

After TMC came to power, things went from bad to worse for Hindus residing in the bordering districts of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee adopted the same communist model of governance in West Bengal. The criminals, goons and corrupt politicians of CPI(M) were welcomed with open arms. Sheik Shahjahan and his goons like Noor Alam (alias Uttam Sardar) and Shibu Hajra frequently called Hindu women to the TMC party office for their “entertainment”. Several well-equipped dens were constructed in isolated locations where Hindu women were brought for “serving” them¹.

Women were forced to visit them until they were “satisfied”. Women were abused and molested in front of their husbands and family members. If they refused, their family members would be subjected to beatings and mental torture. Many families have sent their young female members out of West Bengal to protect them from the clutches of Shaik Shahjahan and his goons². There are records of unprovoked attacks on Hindus by Shaik Shahjahan and his goons. They had randomly opened fire on the villagers of Rampur Gayen Para Halder Bheri in 2014, severely injuring 26 Hindus³. Amay Bhuiya was building a group of Hindu youth to resist these frequent attacks led by Shaik Shahjahan. He and his friends Anup Mandal and Paresh Mandal were brutally attacked by Shahjahan and his men in August 2014. Anup had lost his life and Paresh was severely injured as a result of this attack.

Neither the leftists nor the TMC party considers Hindus as their reliable vote bank. Both of these parties are conducting systematic demographic inversion in parts of West Bengal. Criminals like Shahjahan had ensured that the people of Sandeshkhali could not exercise their electoral rights for over 13 years. Voters were sent back from polling stations after putting ink on their fingers². Rohingyas formed the backbone of Shaik Shahjahan’s army of goons. Rohingyas started entering West Bengal from 2016. Providing them with food, shelter, employment and every possible form of aid became the top priority of the TMC party. Eyewitnesses allege that Trinamool functionaries not only facilitated their illegal entry into Bengal through the international border but also helped them get ration cards and Aadhaar cards based on fake birth certificates, residential certificates and school certificates issued by pliant local authorities. An entire ecosystem has developed in the bordering districts for providing documents to Bangladeshi Muslims and Rohingyas for money.

Local people allege that members of CPI(M) and TMC collect a portion of this money for their party fund. In return, the Rohingyas provided the muscle power to keep their political rivals in a state of subjugation. The party members, who used to pick up Hindu girls and women and deliver them to Trinamool leaders, were mostly Rohingyas. Goons like Shaik Shahjahan, Isha Lashkar, Majid Master had their own courts for dispensing “justice”. People going to the police were murdered and women from their families were abducted.

The Rohingyas have earned a notorious reputation even among Bengali Muslims for their involvement in criminal activities including drug smuggling, flesh trade, child trafficking and organ trading of children. While Bengali Muslim crime lords in Sandeshkhali and other places use Rohingyas as their foot soldiers, they also maintain a distance from them. Parents are afraid of letting their children venture alone in areas having a sizeable Rohingya population. A local resident Hiran Das said, “Right from the very beginning, the Rohingyas were a menace. They used to tease Hindu women and even attempted to molest Hindu girls a few times. They were provided blanket protection by Trinamool leaders, especially Shahjahan”.

The wife of a trader who has suffered atrocities at the hands of Trinamool leaders said, “There have been many cases of Rohingya men molesting our (Hindu) girls in the presence of their own womenfolk – their wives, mothers or daughters. What is shocking is that Rohingya women actually encourage their men to harass and commit crimes against Hindu women because we are kafirs in their eyes”.⁴

Several news outlets have received similar horror reports from local women. A mother of two children narrated her tale to Swarajya- “Some Trinamool men would come and pick me up in the evening and take me to the house of a leader where I would be raped. After the assault, I would be dropped back at my house late in the evening or past midnight. This went on for a few months till they stopped bothering me. I guess he grew tired of me”.⁵

ED officials who came to raid were attacked and driven out by “followers” of Shaik Shahjahan on January, 5^th 2024. There was a small clash between TMC and BJP activists on 6^th February after an intense argument over serious allegations of corruption by the ruling party. Trinamool activists raided the houses of some BJP supporters and functionaries during the evening to assert their dominance. The women who protested were manhandled and abused. Fed up with their tyranny, local people rose in revolt.

Large groups of women armed with choppers, machetes and sticks attacked properties belonging to Noor Alam and Shibu Hajra on February 8^th and 9^th. Poultries and goat farms belonging to them were torched and a few shops belonging to other Trinamool leaders were ransacked. Trinamool leaders and their goons were unable to stand up to the onslaught and left Sandeshkhali. A curfew was imposed on the 9^th of February and the West Bengal Police was mobilised to quell the uprising.

Ghastly tales of police brutalities had surfaced over the next few days. Internet was suspended and leaders of the protest were arrested on trumped-up charges. Local police and goons of Trinamool ransacked and raided houses of villagers at night. There are several accounts of them beating up men and molesting women. Women were threatened with gang rape, their hair and saree were pulled, hands were grabbed and bangles were shattered⁶. The men were forced to spend the nights away from home and the terrified women were left waiting for dawn.

Even in the face of such repression, there were reports of defiance and protests in places like Khulna, Korakati, Durga Mandap on the 11^th and 12^th of February, where locals resisted the Police and goons of TMC. The West Bengal Police had resorted to using brutal force against a rally of protestors at Basirhat on 13^th February, grievously injuring several people, including women. Videos of Police pelting stones at the protestors have gone viral on every social media. This was done to prevent political leaders of the opposition parties from visiting Sandeshkhali.

The Kolkata High Court ordered the TMC government to repeal Section 144 (Curfew) on 13^th February ⁷. Curfew was reimposed on the 14^th February in seven gram panchayats, effectively cutting off Sandeshkhali from the rest of Bharat⁶. The desperate locals begged the Central Government to intervene and replace the West Bengal Police with Central Forces. They accused the West Bengal Police of tearing away any complaints of molestation or rape⁸.

Ironically, one of the prime accused Shibu Hajra was giving interviews to television channels and roaming freely. He was finally arrested on the 18^th of February, a week after Noor Alam’s (alias Uttam Sardar) arrest. Shahjahan is still absconding. The Officer-in-Charge of Sandeshkhali was accused of attacking local women on 17^th February. To threaten and silence a family the police hurled a seven months old child on the floor⁸. That night, the gang of Shaik Shahjahan and a few police from the Sandeshkhali rampaged through the village, vandalising houses and threatening the women with murder and worse¹².

Starting from the 10th of February, the State police issued legal notices to several people who were spreading awareness on social media. The West Bengal Police was caught spreading fake news on X and resorted to hiding replies and comments that pointed out the truth. TMC Councilor Jui Biswas demanded video evidence of rapes on the 18^th of February⁹. The State Women’s Commission was accused of demanding medical certificates from the victims as proof of rape.

A member of the State Child’s Rights Commission had falsely claimed on television media that the seven months old child accidentally fell on the 17^th of February¹⁰. The daughter of the woman, who told Republic Bangla that only Hindu women were used for sex slavery, has been missing since February 18^th ¹¹. She said that the West Bengal Police had refused to file a missing report and told her to bring a recommendation from Shaik Shahjahan, Shibu Hajra and Noor Alam. A relative of Shibu Hajra who spoke about the various crimes of Shaik Shahjahan and exposed the real name of Uttam Sardar (alias Noor Alam) was attacked by men in uniform. West Bengal Police had denied any involvement.

Such state-sponsored repression has not managed to suppress the protests. A property belonging to Shaik ShahJahan’s brother Siraj was set on fire and he was forced to run for his life on the 22^nd of February. Several long-term and short-term measures are needed to address the route causes.

Immediate Measures:

Replacement of West Bengal Police with Central Forces: The TMC has Islamised the West Bengal police through mass recruitment of Muslims under the OBC quota. Mamata Banerjee has provided reservations to several Muslim communities under the OBC category. West Bengal Police has exhibited a consistent lack of concern for the welfare of Hindus. National security has also taken a backseat. It is extremely unlikely that any victim would file rape complaints to local police anymore. These records could be used to identify them for future retaliation.
Replacement of corrupt local administrative officers like the Block Development Officer.
Gaining the trust of victims and arranging for mass FIRs to be filed.
Strict action against Mamata Banerjee and the top leadership of TMC: West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee has become a launchpad for conducting demographic warfare against Bharat. Muslims from throughout the world are provided safe havens and documents here. Fake domicile documents were provided to Pakistanis who went on to join the Central Security Forces like Assam Rifles and BSF. The Rohingyas and Bangladeshis involved in the riots at Haldwani, Nuh had allegedly infiltrated through the Bengal Border and found shelter here. Extremist groups like ISIS and Jamaat have a strong foothold in the Muslim-dominated regions of West Bengal.

Long-term Measures:

There are several more Sandeshkhalis scattered throughout the bordering districts of West Bengal. It is necessary to encourage influencers and fact-finding teams to visit locations like Kaliachak (Maldah) and Hilly in Dinajpur and bring such data out. A dossier must be created.
Removal of Indo-Bangla Non-Lethal Treaty: This treaty has led to several attacks on our Border security forces. Stopping illegal immigration has become nearly impossible and there are reports of the BSF planning to use bee hives along the border to curb illegal immigration.
Creation of a buffer zone (at least 10kms) along the Bharat-Bangladesh Border: This is to destroy the ecosystem created in the bordering regions. Only people satisfying specific criteria should be allowed to settle in this region.
Declaring West Bengal as the natural home for persecuted Hindus of Bangladesh should they wish to come.
A clash of civilisations is going on in the bordering districts of West Bengal. Labelling this as mere political violence for the sake of “pseudo-secularism” cannot be justified under any condition. The Central Government must take decisive action to protect our demography and national security. The victims cannot be expected to resist this state-sponsored demographic warfare alone. It is necessary to prevent another situation like the post-poll violence, where the victims were subjected to revenge rapes and other atrocities for more than two years.
