The district administration in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has quickly taken steps to preserve the ancient pilgrimage sites and stepwells that reflect the area's historical importance. After discovering the Kartik Mahadev Temple and a stepwell, the authorities have increased efforts to bring the town's lost heritage back to life and restore these sites to their original condition.
On Thursday, authorities started excavating an ancient well located 200 meters from the Jama Masjid. This well is believed to be a "death well" (Mrityu Koop), and it's said that taking a bath in its water pleases Bhagwan Mahadev. Nearby, there was once a temple dedicated to Mahamrityunjay Mahadev, but it has reportedly disappeared over time. The local government and municipal corporation officials started excavating this encroached well as part of their plan to restore 68 pilgrimage sites and 19 historic wells in the region.
Dr. Rajendra Pensia, the district magistrate in charge of Sambhal's historic preservation initiatives, stated, "The administration aims to transform the district into a prominent tourist destination. Under supervision of the civic authorities, 'Mrityu Koop' is being dug by a team led by Kot Purvi Councillor Gagan Varshney." Locals remember that the well had water as recently as 12-15 years ago before it was allegedly encroached upon and filled in. The district administration has made it clear that they are working hard to develop Sambhal as a tourist destination, and they believe their efforts will bring positive results soon. Sambhal is home to 68 pilgrimage sites and 19 wells, and the administration is committed to preserving and beautifying the historical heritage structures that are at risk of disappearing.
These proactive efforts have given hope to the Hindu community. Locals believe that reviving Sambhal’s pilgrimage sites, stepwells and other historical buildings will help establish it as a well-known tourist destination, both in India and abroad. Following a court-ordered assessment of the Shahi Jama Masjid, which the petitioners claimed was once the Harihar shrine, the excavation drive got underway. The Kartik Mahadev temple was eventually found as a result of the survey, which was carried out last month and caused demonstrations and violence. This further fuelled efforts to restore Sambhal's spiritual and historical sites.
