Amidst the Congress party's emergence from the 'inheritance tax' controversy, Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Sam Pitroda ignited another debate by commenting on India's diversity.
He remarked on the physical appearances of people across different regions, stating that individuals in the South resemble Africans, those in the West look like Arabs, and those in the East resemble Chinese.
Speaking about India's status as a shining example of democracy globally, Pitroda highlighted that the country's citizens have endured 75 years in a harmonious environment where coexistence prevailed despite occasional disputes.
He noted that India has successfully maintained unity despite its diverse population, illustrating with examples such as people in the East resembling Chinese, those in the West resembling Arabs, individuals in the North having a fair complexion, and possibly those in the South resembling Africans.
He further emphasised that the people of India hold respect for various languages, religions, cuisines, and customs, all of which vary from region to region. He expressed his belief in an India where everyone has a rightful place and is willing to make small compromises for the greater good.
Sam Pitroda's racist remarks have triggered a massive outrage with people from different parts of the country lashing out at the Congress party for his outlandish comments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned him for his statement following which he has decided to step down as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress.
His resignation was accepted by the Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who stated that it was Pitroda's own decision.
Sam Pitroda, currently based in the United States has been a longstanding associate of the Congress Party. He was Rajiv Gandhi's advisor when the latter became Prime Minister. During the UPA 1 regime, he headed the National Knowledge Commission of India and became an advisor to Manmohan Singh on public information infrastructure.
Earlier, Pitroda ignited controversy by discussing the concept of inheritance tax in the United States, suggesting that such issues would need deliberation. He remarked, "In America, there is an inheritance tax".
If one has 100 million USD worth of wealth and passes away, only 45 percent can be transferred to their children, with the government claiming 55 percent." Pitroda stated that this law seemed reasonable to him, as it implies that individuals should leave a portion of their wealth for public benefit.
In response to the ensuing uproar, Pitroda defended his remarks, questioning why there was panic among the BJP and media.
He clarified that he had simply mentioned the US inheritance tax as an example during a television discussion and emphasised the need for discussing and debating such issues. He asserted that his comments were not tied to the policies of any political party, including the Congress.
