The Indian Navy recently conducted a comprehensive two-day Coastal Security Exercise named "Sagar Kavach." This exercise involved all maritime security agencies and took place in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as well as the union territory of Puducherry.
The exercise was executed under the supervision of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command, who holds the authority of Commander-in-Chief, Coastal Defence (East).
The exercise saw active participation from approximately 2,500 personnel representing various key entities involved in maritime security. These participants included personnel from the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard, state and union territory administrations, Marine Police, fisheries departments, customs officials, intelligence agencies, lighthouse operators, port authorities, and forest departments. This collaborative effort aimed to comprehensively evaluate and enhance the coastal security measures and response mechanisms in the designated regions.
As part of the exercise, a variety of scenarios were simulated to assess the readiness of the coastal security agencies and their ability to address potential security threats arising from the sea. These scenarios also involved robust surveillance activities, which were conducted jointly by Indian Naval Ships and Coast Guard assets.
The exercise emphasized the significance of seamless coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders within the coastal security domain. The valuable insights gained from the exercise will be instrumental in refining and bolstering India's coastal security framework, thereby ensuring the safety and security of its coastal regions in the face of evolving maritime challenges.
The primary objective of the 'Sagar Kavach' exercise was to evaluate and ensure the effectiveness and resilience of the coastal security framework, particularly in addressing potential "asymmetric threats" originating from the sea. To achieve this goal, Indian Naval Ships, as well as assets from the Coast Guard and other coastal security agencies, were deployed to bolster surveillance and response capabilities in the designated area.
The exercise involved the implementation of heightened security measures and the utilization of extensive aerial surveillance conducted by Dornier aircraft and helicopters. These aerial operations were conducted from strategic locations such as Visakhapatnam, Chennai, and Ramnathapuram to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Notably, the exercise demonstrated seamless coordination and a harmonious partnership among all stakeholders responsible for coastal security. The knowledge and insights gained from the exercise will be carefully analyzed and integrated into the coastal security infrastructure, further enhancing its resilience and preparedness against potential threats from the sea. This exercise is vital for safeguarding India's coastal regions and maintaining security and stability in the maritime domain.
