Ukrainian authorities said that a Russian missile attack on Kyiv early Friday killed at least one person, injured twelve others, and damaged multiple embassies, CNN reported.
Five of the wounded were sent to the hospital. In contrast, others were treated on the spot, according to a Telegram post from the Kyiv City Military Administration, which verified the deaths. Around 7 am, Russia launched five ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine's capital, but Ukrainian air defences intercepted all of them, according to Ukraine's Air Force Command. Additionally, 40 drones were destroyed, and 20 others failed to hit their targets. However, falling debris caused damage and injuries in Kyiv's city centre.
On Telegram, Kyiv City Military Administration chief Serhiy Popko described the magnitude of the devastation, claiming that debris affected infrastructure in several districts. "In one district, an office building, road surface, and gas pipe were damaged, and five cars caught fire," added Popko.
CNN said that a structure under construction in another location caught fire after the attack. Ukraine's foreign ministry has reported that several embassies, including those of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal, and Montenegro, were damaged in an attack.
Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the ministry, condemned the attack as "barbaric" and mentioned that windows and doors at the embassy buildings were shattered. Portugal's foreign ministry confirmed minor damage to its embassy and called in Russia's charge d'affaires to protest the attack.
The hit was claimed by Russia's defence ministry, which said it was carried out in retaliation for a Ukrainian missile attack on a chemical plant in the Rostov region of Russia earlier this week. "In response to the actions of the Kyiv regime, supported by Western curators, this morning a group strike with long-range precision weapons was launched against the SBU command post, the Kyiv Luch design bureau, which designs and manufactures Neptune missile systems, Olkha ground-based cruise missiles, and the positions of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system," the ministry wrote on Telegram, adding, "The strike targets were achieved. All objects were hit."
In reaction to the strike, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed international allies for their willingness to supply additional air defence systems and demanded harsher penalties on Russia. "I would also like to thank all of our partners who are responding to this and other Russian attacks by being ready to provide more air defence systems," he said as per reports by CNN.
Russian forces heavily shelled the southern city of Kherson, resulting in two deaths and ten injuries, as reported by Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration.
