Russian foreign minister expresses readiness to back India's military production initiatives under 'Made in India'

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has conveyed Russia's readiness to back India's endeavour in manufacturing military products under the 'Made In India' program. Lavrov, following a meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, disclosed that several measures have been undertaken to enhance cooperation between India and Russia. These measures include the initiation of the North-South International Transport Corridor and the establishment of the Chennai-Vladivostok route.
During a press conference following his meeting with Jaishankar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov disclosed, "We explored the potential for military and technical collaboration, particularly in jointly producing contemporary weaponry. Concrete measures have been outlined in this domain. Our collaboration holds strategic significance, and fortifying it aligns with the national interests of both states and contributes to security in the Eurasian continent."
Expressing support for India's efforts to diversify its military and technical ties, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned, "We respect the aspirations of our Indian colleagues and are prepared to assist in their initiative to manufacture military products as part of the 'Made in India' program. Cooperation in this domain is a priority for us, and we have affirmed our commitment to enhancing energy collaboration."
Lavrov and Jaishankar have concurred on the expansion of the legal framework governing India-Russia relations. They specifically aim to expedite the adoption of an agreement on the mutual protection of investment, reinforcing the bilateral ties between the two nations.
During the recent discussions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the joint initiatives undertaken to broaden cooperation between India and Russia. These initiatives include the imminent launch of the North-South International Transport Corridor and the establishment of the Chennai-Vladivostok route. Lavrov also emphasized collaborative efforts in expanding the Northern Sea Route, identifying it as a highly promising area for joint ventures.
Furthermore, both parties have agreed to enhance the legal framework of their relationship. This includes expediting the adoption of crucial agreements such as the mutual protection of investment. Additionally, there is an upcoming agreement on the free trade area between India and the Eurasian Economic Union, underlining the commitment to bolster economic ties between the two nations.
Speaking on the ties between India and Russia, Lavrov affirmed, "Yesterday's talks and today's meeting validate that the relations between Moscow and New Delhi are characterized by a confidential nature and mutual respect. These ties remain unaffected by political fluctuations and authentically reflect the character of our partnership, defined as a special privileged strategic partnership in a document signed by our leadership."
He emphasized the commitment to continued political dialogue as essential for strengthening the bilateral relationship on a sustainable basis. Lavrov highlighted the importance of practical cooperation, particularly focusing on matters discussed during the session of the Intergovernmental Commission.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, EAM Jaishankar said, "Our relationship has been very strong, very steady. And I think we have lived up to a special and privileged strategic partnership. This year we have already met 6 times, and this is our 7th meet. Our Prime Minister and President Putin have also been in frequent contact. We expect a strong Russian participation at the Vibrant Gujarat meeting in January."
