With India-Pakistan tensions escalating following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday. During the call, Lavrov offered Russia’s help for a political resolution to the ongoing crisis. A statement noted that both parties focused on the rapidly escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Lavrov emphasised that Russia is prepared to help find a political solution to the crisis caused by the Pahalgam attack, “should both Islamabad and New Delhi be interested."
Pakistan's foreign ministry said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the need for diplomatic solutions and urged India and Pakistan to remain calm and avoid further conflict. His remarks followed a conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during which they discussed the rising tensions after the Pahalgam attack. Jaishankar emphasised that those responsible for the attack must be held accountable. The two leaders also talked about the timeline for upcoming high-level and top-level meetings. Jaishankar wrote on X, “Discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack with FM Lavrov of Russia yesterday. Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice. Also spoke about our bilateral cooperation activities."
Following the April 22 terror attack that killed 26 tourists and revealed Pakistan’s suspected involvement, India has reached out to multiple countries through a series of phone calls. Nations like Iran and Malaysia have expressed willingness to mediate and backed calls for an impartial probe into the incident. Tensions between India and Pakistan have risen following a deadly terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 people, with concerns over cross-border links. The attack is believed to have been carried out by the Resistance Front (TRF), a faction of Lashkar-e-Taiba known for its violent history. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the attack.
On Saturday, India announced a ban on importing goods from Pakistan or those passing through it and Pakistani ships were also barred from entering Indian ports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the country is determined to take “firm and decisive" steps against terrorists and those who support them. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet on Monday to address the growing tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan has said it will raise concerns about New Delhi’s “aggressive actions and provocations”, including the halting of the Indus Waters Treaty.
