At least 13 people were killed and 10 injured after a Russian jet-powered drone struck two trains at Dnipro railway station in central Ukraine on Thursday, October 29, Ukrainian authorities said.
"Thirteen people were killed in a Russian attack on Dnipro. At least five more were wounded," Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Ganzha said on Telegram.
Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov called the incident a "tragedy", saying a drone had struck a civilian electric train. "Many people have been killed. Lots are wounded," he said.
Ukrainian Railways said the drone hit a platform where train No. 866, travelling from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia, was standing. The railway operator's chief, Oleksandr Pertsovsky, said authorities had announced an elevated threat level before the attack. However, many people remained on the platform, he said in a Facebook post.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, describing it as "horrific". He said Russian forces targeted a platform where a commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing.
"A horrific Russian strike on the railway station in Dnipro. The Russians launched a drone attack on a platform where an ordinary commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing. Unfortunately, 13 people have been confirmed killed as of now. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Ten more people were injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene," said Zelenskyy.
He urged the United States, the European Union and the G7 to impose stronger sanctions on Moscow, questioning Russia's escalation despite easing of certain sanctions.
"Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating? This is precisely why Ukraine has always said that just and decisive action by America and Europe is needed in response to Russian escalation – sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues. It is time for new, stronger sanctions steps by the EU, the United States, and the G7. I thank everyone who is ready to help in this way," he added.
The attack followed reports of Ukrainian drone activity near Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin told Russian media that air defence systems had destroyed around 30 unmanned aerial vehicles approaching the city. Emergency services were working at locations where drone fragments fell.
Russian news outlet Izvestia reported that new air defence systems were forcing Ukrainian forces to change their drone routes. The systems can influence enemy tactics even before intercepting aerial targets. Another 10 drones heading towards Moscow were intercepted after an earlier group of 15 was destroyed.
Separately, at least 68 people were killed in a collision involving two high-speed trains in Spain's Toledo province on Wednesday. Rescue operations continued amid fears that the death toll could rise. The accident injured passengers and disrupted rail services linking Madrid with Ciudad Real and Andalusia. Spain's rail infrastructure operator, ADIF, confirmed the crash. The Associated Press, citing broadcaster TVE, reported that one train struck the rear of another, sending two coaches off the tracks.
