Local media reported on Monday that an explosion was heard near the Russian consulate in Marseille, a city in southern France. Firefighters have arrived at the scene, according to Reuters.
A report from the Belarusian media outlet NEXTA stated that two Molotov cocktails were thrown into the garden inside the consulate's premises by unknown individuals, according to initial details. A stolen vehicle was discovered close to the attack site, according to the NEXTA report, and no casualties were reported.
According to Reuters, the French Interior Ministry confirmed that no one was harmed in the incident. Meanwhile, Russia described the event as a possible act of terrorism and urged French authorities to investigate. Moscow also stated, via the state news agency TASS, that it was making every effort to bring the matter to France's attention. "The explosions on the territory of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille have all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack," TASS quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.
"We demand (from France) exhaustive and prompt measures to investigate, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russian foreign missions." However, the French police did not immediately confirm reports that people heard an explosion at the Russian consulate.
