Russia on Friday showcased combat drones used by its military in the war in Ukraine. It held the parade on Moscow's Red Square. State TV said this was the first time drones had been displayed in the parade.
President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the event. More than two dozen other foreign leaders joined them. They watched as Russian-made drones were mounted on trucks and driven across the square. These drones were shown on their launchers. Other military equipment also featured in the parade.
The state television commentator described the event live. He said Russian forces had used the drones widely and effectively in what he called the "special military operation" in Ukraine.
Russia displayed several types of drones in the parade. These included the Lancet, Geran-2, Orlan-10, and Orlan-30 drones. The occasion marked the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union and its allies defeating Nazi Germany.
The Orlan drones are commonly used for reconnaissance and target selection. The ZALA Lancet is a loitering munition, used for both surveillance and strikes. Reports claim it has destroyed many Ukrainian military assets, such as tanks and even a military aircraft.
The Geran-2 is a suicide or kamikaze drone produced by Russia, though its design originated in Iran. An earlier version was developed in Iran. Russia has used the Geran-2 to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kyiv has accused Moscow of using these drones against residential areas as well.
Russia has denied targeting civilians. It states that it only strikes military or military-linked targets.
Ukraine has also developed advanced drones. Its military has used them effectively against Russian troops. Ukrainian drones have struck targets inside Russia, including oil depots and refineries.
