At least one person was killed after Russia carried out its biggest drone strike on Ukraine since the beginning of the war. The large-scale aerial attack took place just hours after US President Donald Trump promised more military support to Ukraine and accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of spreading “bullsh*t” during discussions about peace.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that the strike involved a total of 728 drones and 13 missiles. This new assault surpassed the previous record of 539 drones, which was set on July 4.
Officials in Ukraine confirmed that one civilian died in the Khmelnytskyi district located in western Ukraine. “This is a demonstrative attack, and it comes at a time when there have been so many attempts to achieve peace and ceasefire, but Russia rejects everything,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
The attack on Lutsk, a city in the northwestern part of Ukraine, was so severe that it caused Poland to send military aircraft into its own airspace, according to CNN.
“Literally everything was heading toward Lutsk,” said Ivan Rudnitskyi, the head of the military administration in Volyn province where Lutsk is located, in a message on Telegram.
According to officials in Kyiv, Ukrainian air defence managed to shoot down at least 718 out of the 728 drones that had been launched by Russia.
In retaliation, Ukraine launched 86 drones into Russian territory during the night.
Russia’s latest offensive came just two days after Donald Trump criticised Putin for not showing any real intention of reaching a peace agreement and announced new military aid for Ukraine.
“We receive a lot of bullsh*t from Putin, if you want to know the truth,” Trump stated in a Cabinet meeting. “He’s very nice all the time, but it ends up being meaningless.”
