Russia has proposed that Indian airlines be allowed to operate domestic flights within Russia. This proposal comes as Russian airlines are struggling to meet demand due to Western sanctions that have restricted their access to aircraft and parts from US and European manufacturers. However, Indian airlines have informed the government that this arrangement may not be feasible.
Russia sought assistance from China, India, and a few other Asian countries, according to a report in The Economic Times. Russia presented these nations with a "cabotage" plan, which grants the authority to run water, air, or other forms of transportation inside a designated territory. The report also said the issue was discussed at the recent BRICS summit.
Indian carriers, however, seem unlikely to undertake the project. According to the report, carriers informed the government that insurers and businesses that leased to them would not support the proposal because of the Western sanctions. Additionally, the carriers stated that they are also experiencing a lack of aircraft to fly locally. Russian airlines had a sizable fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft prior to the conflict in Ukraine. All scheduled supplies, however, have been suspended due to sanctions, and they are now being redirected to airlines in other countries.
Additionally, Western companies have ceased providing Russia with software and components. Constant component replacements, frequent software upgrades, and normal inspections are necessary for aircraft. According to the report, the lack of these has had a major impact on growth attempts since Russian aircraft are being grounded for extended periods of time.
