Russia has announced significant increases in import tariffs on a range of consumer goods from countries that support sanctions against it, according to a government order published late Friday. The new tariffs, which include higher duties on items such as wine, beer, candies, biscuits, and shampoo, will take effect seven days after publication and remain in place until December 31, 2024.
The move comes in response to the sanctions imposed on Russia over its military actions in Ukraine, which led to a substantial decline in imports from these sanctioning nations in 2022. Consequently, the prices of imported goods, particularly alcohol, have surged.
Despite some Western producers ceasing sales to Russia, the country has managed to maintain the supply of foreign goods through alternative channels, including grey imports. As a result, many foreign products continue to be available on Russian store shelves.
The new tariffs will see perfume, cosmetics, and shampoo from Poland subjected to a 35% customs duty. Similarly, import duties for wallpapers from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will rise to 50%, and tariffs on wine will increase to 20%.
These measures reflect Russia's ongoing efforts to counteract the economic impact of international sanctions while seeking to protect its domestic market.
