Videos of a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Kazan, showing strikes on several residential high-rise buildings, went viral on social media and Telegram channels on Saturday.
Russian state media confirmed the attack, reporting that eight drones were used, with six of them hitting residential buildings in Kazan, located about 800 kilometres east of Moscow. Emergency services responded to the scene and evacuated inhabitants after local officials stated that there were no fatalities or injuries from the incident. On Telegram, Rosaviatsia, Russia's aviation regulator, declared that all flight arrivals and departures had been temporarily suspended at Kazan airport.
Kazan airport in Russia temporarily halted all incoming and outgoing flights on Saturday after a Ukrainian drone strike targeted the city, according to an announcement by Rosaviatsia, Russia's aviation authority, on Telegram. The Baza Telegram channel, which is linked to Russian security groups, shared unverified video footage showing a drone hitting a high-rise building, causing a large explosion.
At Izhevsk airport, located in a smaller city northeast of Kazan, Rosaviatsia also temporarily restricted flights. Russia and Ukraine traded accusations over lethal missile attacks earlier Friday. Five people were killed in a missile strike on the Kursk border region, according to Moscow, while one person was killed in an earlier hit on Kyiv.
