As per official reports, Russia hammered Ukraine’s electrical grid with nearly two dozen missiles overnight Saturday, in a latest assault on the country’s energy system. Officials said the missiles struck four thermal power plants belonging to the country’s largest private energy company.
The airstrike, executed using ballistic missiles and cruise missiles launched by Russian strategic bombers stationed in the Arctic Circle, marked the fourth large-scale air assault aimed at the power grid since March 22.
"The enemy again massively shelled Ukrainian energy facilities," said DTEK, Ukraine's largest private electricity company, adding that four of its six thermal power plants had suffered damage overnight.
Rescuers fought to extinguish fires at multiple energy facilities in the western areas of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, adjacent to NATO allies Poland and Romania, according to officials.
Following attacks on energy facilities in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, officials reported disruptions in running water supplies in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Kyiv's Western allies to provide additional air defence systems to safeguard his nation's airspace, as the air force said it shot down 21 out of 34 incoming missiles.
"Thirty-four Russian missiles overnight. We managed to shoot down some of them. But the world has every opportunity to help (us) shoot down every missile and every drone," Zelensky said in a post on Telegram.
Energy facilities were targeted in at least three regions, including Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk in the west, which are hundreds of kilometres away from the front line, stated Energy Minister German Galushchenko in a Facebook post.
One of the missiles landed 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the Polish-Ukrainian border, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
Kyiv alleges that Moscow is intensifying attacks both from the air and on the ground in anticipation of nationwide celebrations on May 9, commemorating Russia's victory in World War II, and amidst Ukraine's anticipation of the arrival of essential US weaponry.
