Moscow has reportedly uncovered a spy network operated by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). According to sources, the group had been trying to steal advanced air defence technology from Russia. “This is the first such mission by ISI in that country,” sources told Republic TV. The revelation has raised serious security concerns in Moscow, as it points to a new and bold attempt by Pakistan’s intelligence agency to gain access to Russia’s high-level defence capabilities.
In a major counter espionage operation, Russian authorities arrested a man in St Petersburg who was allegedly caught smuggling documents linked to the development of military helicopters and air defence systems. The seized materials reportedly contained highly sensitive information about MI8AMTSHV and MI8 AMTSHV VA military transport helicopters. People familiar with the investigation said the documents could have been used to replicate or reverse engineer key elements of Russian military technology. The arrest has led to a wider probe into how the ISI managed to establish its network inside Russia.
The spy ring was discovered only a few months after Operation Sindoor, a military campaign in which Russian-made S400 missile defence systems used by the Indian Air Force had played a crucial role. Sources told Republic TV that ISI had allegedly tried to smuggle technology related to these same air defence systems. Reports also suggest that India plans to acquire five more S-400 systems from Russia, further deepening defence ties between the two countries.
Recently, tensions between Russia and Pakistan have risen after the Russian embassy in Islamabad criticised an article in the English-language newspaper The Frontier Post for promoting an anti-Russian narrative. The statement reflected growing unease between the two nations, as diplomatic relations continue to be tested amid this espionage scandal.
