On Sunday, Russian forces launched attacks on Ukraine's two largest cities, with missile fragments hitting a suburban apartment building in Kyiv and a guided bomb causing fatalities in Kharkiv.
As Russia's invasion of Ukraine surpasses 28 months, Russian forces continue to carry out frequent attacks on Ukrainian cities and target energy infrastructure as well.
Attacks on Kyiv have become less frequent compared to other cities, although the capital experienced a series of assaults in March. Kharkiv continues to face regular attacks, although military analysts note a decrease in frequency since the United States authorised the Ukrainian use of its weapons on specific Russian targets.
In Kyiv's Obolon suburb, the local military administration reported that falling fragments from a Russian missile ignited a fire and damaged balconies on a 14-storey apartment building on Sunday.
Emergency services, communicating via the Telegram messaging app, indicated that five female residents were treated for stress, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 10 residents had been evacuated.
A picture posted online by emergency services showed at least four balconies with visible scorch marks.
The head of the military administration of Kyiv region mentioned that missile fragments had also caused injuries and damage outside the capital, although specific details were not provided.
During the initial weeks of the February 2022 invasion, Russian forces were halted from advancing on Kyiv and later redeployed along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line in the east.
In Kharkiv, which remained under Ukrainian control during the early stages of the war, a guided bomb ignited a fire and tragically killed a delivery service driver outside a depot on Sunday.
Regional Governor Oleh Synehubov reported that nine people were injured in the Kharkiv attack, including an 8-month-old infant. Pictures shared online depicted severe damage to the depot and trucks parked outside.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a Telegram post, stated that Russia had used over 800 guided bombs on Ukrainian targets in the previous week. He reiterated his call for enhanced weapons systems in his nightly video address.
"The sooner the world helps us deal with the Russian combat aircraft launching these bombs, the sooner we can strike - justifiably strike – Russian military infrastructure...and the closer we will be to peace," he said.
