Russia appeals for the release of hostages held by Hamas

In the course of diplomatic discussions held in Moscow, Russia has strongly urged Hamas to release all hostages currently under their control. This appeal comes as Russia highlights the deeply concerning humanitarian situation in Gaza, characterizing it as having reached "catastrophic" levels.
The call for the release of hostages underscores Russia's commitment to addressing the pressing issues affecting the region, with a particular emphasis on the well-being of individuals in Gaza.
Following the October attack on Israel, where Hamas militants took approximately 250 hostages, around 132 of whom Israel says remain in Gaza. In diplomatic talks between Russian diplomat Mikhail Bogdanov and senior Hamas official Musa Abu Marzouk, the Russian foreign ministry underscored the urgency of promptly releasing civilians captured during the October 7th attacks.
In a released statement, the Palestinian Islamist group stated that the discussions aimed to elucidate the movement's stance and policies regarding the prisoners it currently holds. The talks also covered the exploration of options for achieving a ceasefire in the besieged territory. During the dialogue, Russian diplomat Mikhail Bogdanov conveyed Russia's support for the rights of the Palestinian people.
Later, Bogdanov held a meeting with Israel's ambassador to Moscow, Simona Halperin, as confirmed by the Russian foreign ministry. During the encounter, Halperin was briefed on the focused endeavours of Russian diplomacy aimed at securing the prompt and unconditional release of civilians, including Russian citizens, currently held in the Gaza Strip. The ministry issued a statement outlining the discussions.
Bogdanov affirmed Moscow's unwavering stance in favour of a comprehensive Middle East settlement grounded in UN decisions. Russia has openly criticized Israel's military campaign in Gaza and has consistently advocated for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Hamas initiated attacks on October 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,140 individuals in Israel, with the majority being civilians, as per an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
In response, Israel has pledged to eradicate Hamas, and its military actions have led to the death of at least 24,762 individuals in Gaza, with around 70 percent of them being women, young children, and adolescents, according to the territory's health ministry.
