On June 24, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde instructed Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar to take strict action against illegal pubs and demolish any structures violating building regulations. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Shinde also directed the police to intensify efforts against drug peddlers to achieve a drug-free Pune.
Pubs in Maharashtra’s second-largest city, Pune, came under scrutiny in the past 48 hours following the emergence of a video, purportedly from Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) on Fergusson College Road, which appeared to show some youths with a substance resembling drugs.
"Strict action should be taken against illegal pubs to make Pune city drug-free. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar to use bulldozers on illegal constructions related to drugs," stated the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The Chief Minister directed officials to take action against drug sellers and to demolish illegal pubs and structures violating building regulations.
In an all-night operation, the Pune Police raided and sealed a posh bar in the city for allegedly serving drugs to minors and also reprimanded two police officials for purported dereliction of duty. The raid on Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) on Fergusson College Road was prompted by a social media video showing minor boys consuming drugs in the restaurant's washroom during a party early on 23 June.
Following public outcry, Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar ordered a probe. A police team conducted a thorough search of L3 last night, sealing the premises early on May 25.
An inspector, an assistant inspector, and two beat marshals from the Shivajinagar police station, who were on night duty, have been suspended in connection with the case.
