RPF constable kills ASI, 3 passengers on Jaipur-Mumbai train; authorities arrest him

According to reports, a tragic incident occurred aboard a running Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express train near Palghar railway station in Maharashtra, where a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable shot dead four individuals, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI). The distressing event took place in the early morning.
As per the information received, the constable identified as Chetan Kumar Choudhary carried out the shooting while on his escort duty. He fired from his automatic weapon, targeting and killing the RPF ASI, Tika Ram Meena, and three other passengers onboard the train. After shooting his senior officer, the constable proceeded to another bogie where he fatally shot three more passengers.
The incident took place in the B5 coach of the Jaipur Express train (12956) at approximately 5:23 am. The train subsequently arrived at Borivali. The constable was apprehended by the police at Mira Road, with the assistance of Government Railway Police and RPF officials.
Authorities have responded promptly to the tragic event, and the situation is under investigation. It is a deeply distressing incident, and further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses. The authorities are providing support to the affected families, and measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of passengers during train travel.
“In an unfortunate incident on 31st July, 2023, in Train No 12956 Jaipur – Mumbai Superfast Express escorting staff constable Chetan Kumar shot at his colleague escort in charge ASI Tika Ram... The constable upon shooting his colleague, initially held passengers at gunpoint. It is regretted that ASI Tika Ram and three passengers were shot at. Constable Chetan Kumar got down near Dahisar and tried to flee after Alarm Chain Pulling. But, was arrested by RPF/Bhayandar along with the weapon,” the Western Railway spokesperson said.
According to Sumit Thakur, the chief PRO of the Western Railway, the reason behind the incident is not yet known. As of now, the accused constable is in the custody of the Mira Road railway police, as stated by the official. The bodies of the victims have been taken out of the train at Borivali railway station. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances and motive behind this tragic incident.
According to a statement by the police, “It was reported on train no 12956 at 5.23 on 31.7.23 that there had been a firing in B5 coach. It was confirmed that CT Chetan on escort duty, had fired on the escort incharge ASI Tika Ram. The train has arrived at BVI and, as per advance information; casualties of 3 civilians have also been reported, in addition to ASI. Sr DSC BCT is on the way to the site.”
“They said the constable has been caught. DCP North GRP has been informed. Detailed report to follow,” the police statement added.
“The families of the deceased persons are being contacted and the ex gratia amount will be given to them. The incident took place between Vapi and Palghar station,” DRM Neeraj Kumar said, ANI reported.
