According to recent reports, the Ministry of Coal in India is actively spearheading the development of the National Coal Logistic Plan to bolster the nation's energy security and achieve the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. This initiative is primarily aimed at decreasing the dependence on imported coal by introducing innovative strategies.

One such strategy, known as First Mile Connectivity (FMC), is gaining significant traction due to its potential to revolutionize coal transportation while positively impacting the environment.

As per information provided by the Ministry of Coal, the concept of First Mile Connectivity is proving to be a game-changer in the pursuit of sustainable development and environmental conservation. By eliminating the need for road transportation of coal in mining areas, FMC utilizes conveyors or roads to transport coal directly to the nearest railway siding.

This innovative approach significantly reduces the number of trucks on the road, which, in turn, leads to a reduction in air pollution, traffic congestion, and road damage. This information underscores the positive and lasting environmental impact of adopting the First Mile Connectivity approach.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Coal has outlined its commitment to this transformative concept by initiating a total of 67 First Mile Connectivity Projects. These projects, encompassing various coal producers such as CIL, SCCL, and NLCIL, are being executed in three phases, with the collective goal of achieving mechanized handling of approximately 1 billion tonnes of coal.

To support this endeavor, the Ministry has embarked on railway projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, with a substantial investment of Rs. 26,000 crore to enhance multimodal connectivity.

According to experts, the transition to First Mile Connectivity not only contributes to environmental conservation but also secures economic viability for coal mining operations in the long run. Technologically advanced processes are expected to enhance productivity and decrease operational costs, ultimately boosting the profitability of the coal sector. This shift towards sustainable transportation is positioned as a pivotal strategy in addressing climate change and enhancing air quality.

As per the Ministry of Coal's coordination efforts with the Ministry of Railways, a noteworthy development includes the construction of 13 railway lines dedicated to expanding coal distribution capabilities. These projects, at varying stages of construction, signify a collaborative effort to enhance coal evacuation and distribution capabilities, aligning with the overarching goal of the PM Gatishakti initiative.

The emergence of First Mile Connectivity in coal transportation, as outlined in recent reports, holds promise in establishing environmentally conscious societies.
