In the centre of Kozhikode, an ambitious architectural venture is in progress to revive one of the oldest temples in the nation, the Shri Thrikkaipatta Mahakshetram. Renowned for its rich history, this 1,500 years old temple, is undergoing restoration in a distinctive apsidal form (Gajaprishta), making it the largest of its kind in the state dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya.
The method of the temple's construction is as unique as the temple itself. Started on January 18, 2009, the construction method strictly avoids contemporary concrete materials, opting instead for traditional elements like red laterite bricks, lime, premium timber and copper. The construction strictly adheres to ancient Vastu Shastra principles. The three-tier structure will feature a circumference of 51.12 m and a height of 18 m, making it the biggest Sreekovil of its kind in the state. Inside, the temple is designed with multiple antharalams (inner circles) and carvings, preserving the ancient architectural aesthetics.
Situated at the top of Ponnamkodekunnu hill, on the outskirts of Kozhikode city near the Government Cyberpark, the temple's location holds profound historical and cultural significance. According to historical records, a shrine existed at this site for centuries, though it fell into ruin or was destroyed in the 13th century. The name of the region, Kozhikode, is believed to have originated from ‘Kozhi’ (cock), which symbolises Bhagwan Subrahmanya's flag, further highlighting the area's ancient connection to the deity.
About 25 years ago, prompted by mysterious occurrences and divine intuitions reported by local devotees, a group of young enthusiasts started excavations on the hill. These efforts revealed remnants of earlier temple structures, including plinths, damaged idols, and omakkals (pillar bases), dating back over 750 years, supporting oral histories passed down through generations.
The rediscovery sparked curiosity, leading to extensive research and analysis with the assistance of distinguished historians and archaeologists such as Dr. MGS Narayanan, K. K. Muhammed, and Dr. M. G. Sasibhooshan. After thorough investigations, a panel of astrologers, Vedic scholars, and tantric authorities concluded that the primary deity worshipped here was indeed Bhagwan Subrahmanya.
“This reconstruction not only aims to restore the physical structure but also hopes to rekindle the spiritual and cultural ethos connected with the temple,” said Muralidharan, the general secretary of the temple committee. The site is expected to become a significant spiritual and cultural hub in Malabar, he added.
“This revival and reconstruction of the Shri Thrikkaipatta Mahakshetram represent a significant cultural and religious milestone for Kozhikode and the broader Malabar area,” said noted architect A K Prasanth. The new temple design integrates various traditional architectural features like carved roofing and intricate wood carvings, celebrating Kerala’s rich craftsmanship. The entire structure has been created without a single architectural drawing which is indeed contrary to the modern architecture we propagate. Many architectural students from different parts of the state have shown interest in studying this architectural marvel. The entire project is based on the mathematical calculation of some of the master carpenters, who are believed to be the followers of Perumthachan, he added.
The temple is set to host a grand installation ceremony for the main deity, Bhagwan Subrahmanya. From May 11 to 23, this ceremony will not only commemorate the architectural splendour but also mark the revival of a significant aspect of Kerala's heritage.
