On July 25th President Droupadi Murmu renamed two important halls in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 'Durbar Hall' is now called 'Ganatantra Mandap', and the 'Ashok Hall' has been renamed 'Ashok Mandap'. According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, this renaming initiative is part of ongoing efforts to make the residence more inclusive and representative of India's cultural heritage.
The renaming of these halls by President Droupadi Murmu on July 25th occurs amidst a broader trend of name changes across India since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), came into power. It's noteworthy, however, that President Murmu's decision is independent and not directly linked to any political party, aside from coinciding with the current timing.
The hall formerly known as 'Durbar Hall', which historically hosted ceremonies like the presentation of National Awards, has been renamed 'Ganatantra Mandap'. The term 'Durbar', originally associated with courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and later with British administration, became less relevant after India's transition to a republic ('Ganatantra'). The concept of 'Ganatantra', meaning republic, holds significant roots in Indian society, making 'Ganatantra Mandap' a fitting name, according to an official release.
The hall formerly known as 'Ashok Hall', originally a ballroom, has been renamed 'Ashok Mandap'. The name 'Ashok' carries connotations of freedom from sorrow and refers to Emperor Ashok, a symbol of unity and peaceful co-existence in Indian history. The National Emblem of India is derived from the lion capital of Ashok from Sarnath, further emphasising its cultural significance.
The Ashok tree also holds deep roots in Indian religious traditions and culture. By renaming 'Ashok Hall' to 'Ashok Mandap', the aim is to eliminate traces of anglicisation while preserving the profound values associated with 'Ashok'.
