On Monday, Mumbai Police launched an investigation after a formal complaint was filed against Ranveer Allahbadia, a popular Youtuber known as BeerBiceps on his YouTube channel, who has allegedly cracked obscene jokes on comedian Samay Raina's 'India Got Latent' show aired on YouTube. Meanwhile, after receiving numerous complaints of vulgarity, police officers arrived at the sets of the show in Khar, Mumbai.
Allahbadia has apologised for his comments amid the ongoing controversy by saying, “comment wasn't just inappropriate, it wasn't even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I'm just here to say sorry".
Mumbai Police DCP Diskhit Gedam stated that an inquiry is being made while addressing the complaints filed by activist Rahul Easwar, lawyer Ashish Rai, and local BJP leader Nilotpal Mrinal.
Allahbadia created controversy in the show by asking a contestant, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life, or would you join in once and stop it forever?”
This question immediately sparked an intense backlash, and many users demanded stricter control of online content.
Meanwhile, in the complaint filed by Easwar with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women's Commission, the names of the show's organisers, Allahabadia, Samay Raina and social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, known as The Rebel Kid, who participated in the episode, have been mentioned.
Criticising the YouTuber, the activist said his comments were "highly offensive, grossly obscene, and detrimental to public decency and ethics".
While urging prompt action, Easwar also demanded an investigation to "determine the extent of reach and impact of this content". He insisted that the YouTuber's remarks be removed from all digital platforms.
In his separate video in X, he expressed that it was "time to teach a lesson to these ultra-liberals, FemiNazis, far-left for creating such a perverted situation. Let's file case complaints against these people who are destroying India's culture and misguiding our youngsters, poisoning them."
Lawyer Ashish Rai informed ANI that "the intention behind it seems to be that they wanted to earn more money. We have also given a written complaint to the Presidents of NCW and Maharashtra's Women Commission."
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also weighed in on the debate on Monday, suggesting that action could be taken against the YouTuber. Said, "Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others".
"I received information about this but did not watch it personally. Things have been said and presented in a wrong way. Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others. This encroachment, in my opinion, is wrong," told the reporters who wanted to know his perspective on the obscene remarks.
He gave a warning by saying, "There should be a dignified way of expressing ourselves. In our society, there are rules against obscenity. It is very wrong for someone to violate those rules, and action should be taken against the violators ".
Supporting the Chief Minister's statement, Shinde Sena leader Raju Waghmare cautioned Allahbadia against "exploiting his freedom of expression." "If he doesn't listen, then we will try to shut his show and will also try to legally stop him from making such statements again."
Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma also weighed in on the issue, stating that society never accepts this type of joke. "Making jokes about a mother or a woman's body doesn't look good, and somewhere, it shows how today's youth has stooped down to such a level morally. I think such jokes affect others who are engaged in similar creative things. I have forwarded that video to the NCW Chairperson to take action," Rekha Sharma, also a Rajya Sabha MP, further said.
On Sunday night, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also criticised Allahbadia, stating that "we can't normalise perverse behaviour as cool".
"This isn’t creative. It’s a pervert. And we can’t normalise perverse behaviour as cool. The fact that this sick comment met loud applause must worry us all," she posted on X.
