The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has called for an emergency Kisan Panchayat to take place on Saturday at the GIC ground in Muzaffarnagar. This comes after a chaotic incident at a protest rally, where some participants protested against the presence of farmer leader Rakesh Tikait. The rally, organised in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, became unruly when a group within the crowd reportedly heckled Tikait. In the midst of the disruption, his turban was knocked off, as seen in videos circulating on social media.
BKU national president Naresh Tikait approved the emergency panchayat and claimed that the happening was not an accident but “part of a conspiracy orchestrated by a political party to weaken the farmers' movement.” He stated, “The incident was not spontaneous. It was pre-planned and driven by political motives,” and mentioned that farmers from across the area had started gathering in Sisauli and Muzaffarnagar for the meeting, which is set to begin in the afternoon.
Rakesh Tikait condemned the disruption at Friday's Akrosh rally, which was held by right-wing groups to protest the Pahalgam attack, during his conversation with reporters. Tikait said, “This is a conspiracy by a particular political party to suppress the farmers' voice. Some youths were deliberately sent to disrupt the rally.” He also stated that the people who confronted him appeared to be intoxicated.
In another statement, Tikait revealed that BKU would soon organise a tractor march to protest the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. He mentioned that the date for the march would be set soon and urged the central government to take decisive action against terrorism to calm the increasing public outrage.
