Rajasthan’s Congress legislators continued their overnight sit-in protest inside the state assembly following the suspension of six-party MLAs. Govind Singh Dotasra was among them. The suspensions were issued after a protest in the House on Friday over comments made by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, Tikaram Jully, stated that discussions were carried out with three ministers on Friday night. However, the talks remained inconclusive, and the sit-in protest persisted. "We demand that the minister withdraw his remark. There have been precedents where words were expunged, but the government itself does not want to run the House, leading to this issue," Jully informed reporters on Saturday.
The protest started during the Question Hour on Friday when Avinash Gehlot addressed the opposition, saying, "In the 2023-24 budget also, like always, you named the scheme (on working women's hostels) after your 'Dadi' (grandmother) Indira Gandhi." His remark sparked a heated uproar in the House, leading to three adjournments.
Amid this straight uproar, Government Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg proposed the suspension of six Congress MLAs, Govind Singh Dotasra, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Jakir Hussain, Hakam Ali, and Sanjay Kumar. The proposal was approved through a voice vote. Following this, the Speaker suspended the House until 11 a.m. on Monday.
In response, Congress MLAs staged a sit-in protest inside the assembly, rejecting to leave and choosing to stay overnight in the House to sustain their demonstration.
