Tensions have risen in several parts of Rajasthan after the discovery of a gang of Muslim men involved in the sexual exploitation and forced conversion of minor Hindu girls. A shutdown was held on Monday, February 24th, in Ajmer, Beawar and Bhilwara districts, as people expressed their anger over the crime. The public is demanding the death penalty for all those responsible for the crime.
Eleven have been accused, including a former independent councillor, in connection with the case. Since the victims were minors, a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. So far, eight accused have been arrested, while three minors have been taken into custody. On February 23, the police arrested former councillor Hakim Qureshi. He was presented before the POCSO court judge at their residence in Kotda on the same day and was sent to police custody for five days. Qureshi is accused of helping the other accused in the case.
The police have identified the accused as Rihan Mohammad (20), son of Jaan Mohammad, from Rajnagar Police Station area, Bijainagar; Sohail Manshuri (19), son of Anwar Hussain, from Taro ka Kheda, Bijainagar; Luqman alias Soheb (20), son of Mohammad Usman, from Hurda Road, Gulabpura; Arman Pathan (19), son of Kalu Khan, from Rajnagar Police Station area, Bijainagar; and Sahil Qureshi (19), son of Mohammad Sabir, from Sajanabad Police Station area, Gulabpura. Additionally, the police have arrested Shravan (a café operator), Karim, and Aashiq, who are currently on a 7-day remand. Three minors involved in the case have been sent to a juvenile correction home.
On February 15, a victim's family addressed the police, bringing to light the horrifying instance of schoolgirls in the Bijainagar police station area being sexually exploited and blackmailed. An organised group of Muslim men was allegedly pursuing young Hindu girls for extortion and sexual exploitation. The members of the gang used to follow their victims in a prearranged way. When their victims reacted, they seduced them by forming romantic bonds with them. To extort money and blackmail their victims, they took pornographic pictures and videos of them and sexually exploited them. Additionally, the criminals contacted other girls using the social media profiles of their victims. The victims' families stated that the girls were forced to follow religious practices and pressured to convert. It is important to note that all the accused work as labourers and have never attended school, yet they were able to target these minor girls who go to school.
One of the victims stated that her hand was cut with a blade when she refused to observe Roza during Ramzaan. They were continuously subjected to sexual exploitation. During the initial interrogation, both the accused and the victims revealed shocking details. The victims mentioned that men would arrive in new vehicles, including Bullet motorcycles and other cars, to take them away. "A Brahmin girl would fetch ₹20 lakh if sold, and you (a Dalit) would get ₹10 lakh," one of the victims recalled. In their statements, the girls claimed that they were compelled to bring in other girls and were regularly threatened with explicit photos and videos.
