On Saturday, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray told his party workers to pause their campaign pushing for the use of Marathi in banks and other institutions. He said there's no need to continue the agitation for now as "we have created enough awareness on the issue." In a letter addressed to party members, Thackeray pointed out that the protest highlighted what can happen when Reserve Bank of India rules about using the local language are ignored.
"There is no issue in halting this agitation now because we have created enough awareness on the issue, Thackeray said. Halt the agitation for the time being, but do not let focus go away from it. I urge the government to see that the law is followed. Wherever the law is not followed, wherever Marathi manoos are taken for granted or face insult, the MNS will go for discussion with them," Thackeray cautioned.
He gave these directions to party members just a day after the United Forum of Bank Unions sent a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that individuals identifying as MNS supporters had been going to bank branches and threatening the employees. In a letter to Fadnavis, the United Forum of Bank Unions stated, "Their demand is that all display boards be exclusively in Marathi and that all officials must speak only in Marathi."
The statement mentioned that some bank officials have faced threats and even physical attacks. In response, Fadnavis issued a warning on Friday, saying that strict action would be taken against anyone who tries to take the law into their own hands. On the other hand, Thackeray emphasised that it’s the government's duty to implement RBI guidelines properly.
"We will not allow anyone to take the law in their hands, but it's also not our desire to do so. Since you are the protector of the law, should you not implement the RBI rules on this," Thackeray declared.
On Thursday, members of the MNS got a commitment from the manager of a private bank in Thane to put up Marathi signboards at the branch, and they also took down an English sign. During his Gudi Padwa rally on March 30, Thackeray once again stressed his party’s demand to make Marathi compulsory for official use. He also warned that anyone who intentionally refuses to speak Marathi would be "slapped."
