The Election Commission has uploaded Rahul Gandhi's affidavit, which he filed with his nomination from Kerala's Wayanad for the Lok Sabha elections. According to the affidavit, the total value of the Congress leader's assets has increased by over 28% in the last five years, rising from over ₹15 crore in 2019 to over ₹20 crore in 2024. Consequently, he has seen an increase in wealth of over ₹6 crore during this period.
The majority of his assets consist of immovable properties such as land and commercial buildings, valued at ₹11,15,02,598.00. His movable assets amount to ₹9,24,59,264.00, primarily invested in shares and mutual funds.
He holds shares in 25 companies, including blue-chip stocks such as Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank, ITC, Infosys, Nestle, TCS, and Britania. The value of his shares totals ₹4.34 crore, alongside ownership of 7 mutual funds valued at ₹3,81,33,572.
In addition to cash holdings and bank deposits, along with other assets, the combined value of his movable assets is now ₹9,24,59,264.00, compared to ₹5,80,58,779 in 2014. This signifies a substantial increase of 60% in the value of his movable assets, primarily consisting of shares and mutual funds.
Over the past 20 years, Rahul Gandhi has witnessed a significant surge in the value of his total declared assets, rising from just above ₹55 lakh in 2004 to over ₹20 crore last year, marking an increase of 3583%. In contrast, the value of his immovable assets has experienced a more modest growth rate of 11%.
Rahul Gandhi's annual income, as per his Income Tax returns, has remained relatively stagnant over the years, hovering around ₹1.2 crore per year. However, this figure dropped slightly to ₹1.02 crore in the fiscal year 2022-23. In addition to salaries and allowances as a Member of Parliament, he also earns rental income from properties he owns.
Rahul Gandhi, despite owning shares and mutual funds in numerous companies and fund managers, has been observed to frequently criticise and denounce the Indian corporate sector publicly.
Presently, Rahul Gandhi is embroiled in 18 criminal cases filed against him across different locations in India, the majority of which are defamation cases arising from his statements. He was convicted in one case, famously known as the Modi surname case, which led to a two-year prison sentence and his disqualification from the Lok Sabha. However, the Supreme Court intervened by staying the conviction and restoring his status as a Member of Parliament.
Furthermore, Rahul Gandhi is facing other legal proceedings, which include a case for disclosing the identity of a minor rape victim, a copyright violation case for the unauthorised use of a song in a promotional video, and the National Herald case.
