Jashimuddin Rahmani Hafi, the leader of the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), has called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to break up India, according to a report by India Today. Rahmani, recently freed by Bangladesh's interim ruler Mohammed Yunus, urged Banerjee to "free Bengal from Modi’s rule and declare its independence."
Rahmani’s release came after Yunus, backed by protestors and the army, toppled the government of Sheikh Hasina last month. The Islamist leader had been imprisoned since 2013 for his involvement in the murders of secular bloggers in Bangladesh. In a video purportedly shot last month, Rahmani warned of “breaking up” India and vowed to "hoist Islamist flags in Delhi."
The fall of Hasina’s relatively liberal government, led by the Bangladesh Awami League (BAL), has seen the country come under the control of the pro-Pakistan Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami. The unelected regime of Yunus has since freed Rahmani, even as Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in violence against religious minorities, including attacks on Hindu homes, temples, and cultural institutions.
In the video, Rahmani extended his threats beyond West Bengal, claiming he would seek China's help to sever the Northeast from India by cutting off the Siliguri Corridor, also known as the ‘Chicken’s Neck’—a vital link between the northeastern states and the rest of India. “If you take a step towards Bangladesh, we will ask China to close the Chicken’s Neck. We will tell the Seven Sisters [northeastern states] to join the freedom movement,” Rahmani said, according to India Today.
He further threatened to work toward separating Kashmir from India, stating, “Tell Kashmir to get ready for freedom. Pakistan and Afghanistan together will help Kashmir gain independence. We will work for the freedom of Kashmir.”
In his message to India, Rahmani issued stark warnings, saying that if India acted against him, the country’s "eyes will be taken out" and "hands will be cut off." He declared, “It is a country of 18 crore Muslims. This is our sacred land. If you dare to look this way, your eyes will be taken out… Take a step forward, and your legs will be broken… Reach out, and your hands will be cut off…”
As Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina had taken a strong stance against Islamist organisations and terrorist groups, which had earned her opposition from Islamist forces and Pakistan-backed groups. These groups are believed to have played a role in the movement that led to her ousting. With Hasina out of power, there are growing concerns that Bangladesh could become a safe haven for Pakistan-sponsored anti-India elements and that radical forces will tighten their control over the country.
