Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. He strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
Putin offered his condolences to the victims and expressed full support for India in its efforts to combat terrorism. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) mentioned that Putin emphasised the importance of holding accountable both the individuals behind the attack and those who supported them. “President Putin @KremlinRussia_E called PM @narendramodi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X.
The call from the Russian President came almost two weeks after a terror attack in the Baisaran meadow area of Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in Kashmir Valley. The attack led to the deaths of 26 people, most of whom were tourists. Russia also supported India after Pakistan threatened to suspend the 1972 Simla Agreement.
Russia emphasised that both countries should resolve their issues through bilateral discussions, following the principles of the Simla Agreement and the 1999 Lahore Declaration. This message was conveyed in a Russian statement after Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar about the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam on Saturday.
