The Punjab police have disrupted operations of two distinct cross-border drug smuggling cartels operated by smugglers based in Pakistan. They have arrested three drug traffickers and seized a total of 9.2 kg of heroin from them.
According to a press release by the police, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav disclosed that based on credible information, police teams from Chheharta Sahib apprehended two drug smugglers in the Shiva Enclave area of Rajasansi. They recovered 8.2 kg of heroin from their possession during the operation.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Bachitar Singh from Jathaul village in Amritsar and Sunny from Guru ki Wadali in Chheharta. Bachitar Singh, one of the accused, was wanted in connection with a murder case at Gharinda police station in 2021.
In addition to seizing 8.2 kg of heroin, police teams recovered Rs 95,000 in cash and an electronic weighing machine, and impounded their Swift car. The press release stated that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under sections 21-C and 23/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar.
In another incident, DGP Gaurav Yadav reported that acting on intelligence inputs, police teams from Ranjit Avenue set up a checkpoint at Ranjit Avenue Bypass. They apprehended Amandeep Singh from Ranian village, Lopoke in Amritsar, and seized 1 kg of heroin from his possession. He added that police also impounded his Volkswagen Vento car, which he was using at the time of arrest.
In response, a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged under section 21-C of the NDPS Act at Ranjit Avenue police station in Amritsar.
Providing further details, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Ranjit Singh Dhillon revealed that initial investigations suggest the accused individuals maintained direct communication with smugglers based in Pakistan. These smugglers allegedly transported drugs into the state via drones after smuggling them from Pakistan.
Dhillon added that ongoing investigations aim to uncover both the backward and forward linkages in these cases, revealing the entire network of drug suppliers, dealers, and their clientele. He emphasised efforts to determine the total quantity of narcotics acquired by the arrested suspects thus far.
