Punjab Police has revoked the licenses of nearly 40 travel agents amid growing controversy over the deportation of Indians who illegally migrated to the United States. These agents charged excessive fees to help people enter foreign countries through unauthorised "donkey routes."
As reported by India Today, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni ordered a crackdown on travel agents.
According to NDTV, some IELTS centre’s licenses were also revoked, and authorities plan to continue these actions. The Amritsar police initiated this move based on complaints against travel agents operating in the city, with further action expected in the coming days.
Police are continuing to register cases against travel agents involved in illegally sending Indians abroad, conducting raids to arrest them.
The latest raid came after more than 300 Indians were deported from the U.S. and Panama earlier this month, according to India Today.
The report states that Punjabis make up the largest group among the deported individuals. Three deportation flights arrived on February 5, 15, and 16, carrying a total of 333 Indians. Punjab had the highest representation, with 126 individuals, accounting for 37.8% of the total.
As reported by India Today, Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) have been instructed to review documents at travel agent and immigration consultant offices. Meanwhile, the district police have been directed to immediately notify the Deputy Commissioner's office about any complaints against travel agents.
Travel agents must keep proper records and ensure they have complete documentation. Authorities have warned that strict action against those operating without authorisation will be taken.
Praveen Sinha, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), reported India Today, "The paperwork of travel agents is being thoroughly checked across Punjab, and awareness is being spread to ensure that people do not attempt to migrate illegally, encouraging them to follow the proper legal procedures”.
According to the report, Punjab has a distinct system governed by the State Travel Professions Regulation Act, which regulates travel agents, ticketing services and consultancy businesses.
