Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini responded to Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday, accusing him of distorting the facts.
This came after Mann, the AAP leader, rejected the BJP-led state's "demand for more water." Mann had claimed that the BJP was pressuring the Punjab government through the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to fulfil Haryana's water demand, while also stating that Punjab had already used up its allocated water share by March. Haryana Chief Minister Saini referred to a letter he wrote to Punjab CM Mann on April 27. He said he was surprised that instead of replying, Mann released a video and misled the public by ignoring the actual facts.
Saini mentioned that on April 26, he had spoken to Mann over the phone and informed him that Punjab officials were hesitant to follow the BBMB Technical Committee's April 23 decision to release water to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan. According to an official statement, Saini said Mann assured him during that call that the issue would be resolved by the morning of April 27. When nothing was done, Saini mentioned that he had written a letter to Mann to address the issue. Saini asked Mann to make sure that water is released to Haryana immediately, as per the decision of the Technical Committee.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu claimed that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was trying to create division between Punjab and Haryana by raising the water issue. This happened at a time when the whole country was united in response to the Pahalgam terror attack from Pakistan. “At this point in time, when everybody stands united to give a befitting reply (to Pakistan) why did you (Mann) speak about creating division,” asked Bittu, referring to Mann’s statement over the water issue. You (Mann) have tried to divide two brothers (Punjab and Haryana) at this point in time and you should seek an apology,” said Bittu in a video posted on his Facebook account.
“The nation’s priority at this time is to show unity and make a strong offensive against Pakistan. Unfortunately, Bhagwant Mann chose this time to divide the states and play petty politics over national interests,” he added.
