In a significant enforcement action, Pune police have arrested 21 Bangladeshi nationals in the Ranjangaon area on suspicions of illegal residency. The group, which includes 15 men, 4 women, and 2 transgender individuals, was reportedly residing in the area with counterfeit documents, including Aadhar cards and PAN cards. This operation highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal immigration and the use of forged identity documents in India.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Deshmukh, the court has granted police custody of 10 individuals while investigations continue. The arrests were initiated following a tip-off received by Assistant Police Inspector Prakash Pawar of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on October 21. A comprehensive search operation was then conducted, led by Crime Branch Police Inspector Avinash Shilimkar and Ranjangaon MIDC Police Inspector Mahadev Waghmode.
SP Deshmukh commented on the situation, stating, "After inquiries at the Ranjangaon MIDC Police Station, we discovered that these individuals were residing illegally in the area. Our current efforts are focused on understanding their motives for staying in the country. Preliminary findings suggest that many are engaged in daily wage labour, but we are still gathering information."
During the operation, police seized nine counterfeit Aadhar cards, several PAN cards, and one voter identification card, indicating a broader issue of document forgery. SP Deshmukh also mentioned that investigators are exploring the possibility of an organised racket or an agent facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals into India.
A case has been filed under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Passport Act of 1920. Authorities are committed to conducting thorough investigations to uncover more details regarding the activities of these individuals and their reasons for residing in the country illegally. The ongoing investigation aims to bring clarity to the situation and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
