Hamza Burhan, an alleged operative of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and one of the accused linked to the 2019 Pulwama suicide attack, was reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Thursday. According to multiple reports, Burhan was attacked in a forest area near Muzaffarabad, where locals heard several rounds of gunfire late on Wednesday night. His body was later found with multiple bullet injuries.
Sources said Burhan was considered a key figure associated with the Pulwama terror attack that took place in February 2019. The attack had killed 40 CRPF personnel after a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident had led to massive outrage across India and significantly increased tensions between India and Pakistan at the time.
Reports claimed that Burhan was ambushed in what appears to be a targeted killing. So far, no group has taken responsibility for the attack. Authorities in Pakistan have also not released any official statement regarding the incident. Security agencies and analysts are closely watching developments surrounding the killing, especially because of Burhan’s alleged links with Jaish-e-Mohammed and terror operations in the region.
According to reports, Hamza Burhan was a resident of Ratnipora and was 22 years old. Indian security agencies had earlier identified him as one of the important operatives involved in planning and coordinating the Pulwama attack. The 2019 strike remains one of the deadliest terror attacks carried out in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years.
The Pulwama attack had also triggered India’s Balakot airstrikes in Pakistan in February 2019. The Indian Air Force had carried out strikes on what India described as terror camps operated by Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot. The developments following the attack gained global attention and pushed India-Pakistan relations into a tense phase.
Officials and security experts believe Burhan’s killing may have happened due to internal rivalry among terror groups operating in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Some analysts have also suggested the possibility of a planned targeted operation carried out by unknown actors. However, there has been no confirmation from any side regarding who was behind the attack or what exactly led to the killing.
The incident has once again brought focus on terror networks believed to be active in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Over the years, India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of allowing terror organisations to operate from its soil and from areas under its control in PoK. Pakistan, however, has denied such allegations in the past.
The death of Burhan is being seen as a significant development because of his alleged involvement in one of the most high-profile terror attacks in recent Indian history. While the circumstances around his killing remain unclear, the incident is likely to raise fresh questions about the activities of terror groups in the region and the internal dynamics among them.
As investigations and reports continue to emerge, officials are expected to closely monitor the situation in PoK. More details regarding the attack and the identities of those involved are still awaited.
