Less than two years after making history as the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), legendary athlete PT Usha may find herself facing a vote of no confidence during an upcoming Special General Meeting scheduled for October 25.
According to the agenda issued by the IOA's Executive Council, point number 26 specifically states that the meeting will “discuss and consider a motion of No Confidence against the President in light of alleged constitutional violations and actions potentially detrimental to Indian sports.” This development marks a significant turn in Usha's leadership, which began with great promise and enthusiasm.
Usha has been engaged in a protracted conflict with members of the IOA’s Executive Council, with allegations being exchanged between both sides. On one hand, she has issued show cause notices to several Executive Council members, accusing them of violating eligibility rules that govern the organisation. On the other hand, her opponents have countered by accusing Usha of exercising “high-handedness” in her decisions and leadership style, raising concerns about her management of the association.
Furthermore, Usha has faced scrutiny from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India regarding a controversial contract with Reliance for a hospitality lounge at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The CAG has alleged that Reliance received “undue favours” in this arrangement and that decisions made by Usha have resulted in a financial loss of Rs 24 crore for the IOA. Usha has vigorously denied these claims, asserting that her actions were always in the best interest of Indian sports.
Other important items on the agenda for the Special General Meeting include a comprehensive review of the president’s powers within the IOA, discussions concerning the sponsorship contracts executed under Usha's leadership, the appointment of a new CEO, and a significant Rs 1.75 crore loan extended to the Weightlifting Federation of India. Additionally, show cause notices have been issued to several Executive Council members, including IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav, Ajay Patel, Bhupinder Singh Bajwa, Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, and Alaknanda Ashok.
As the October 25 meeting approaches, the future of PT Usha's presidency hangs in the balance, with many in the sports community closely watching the unfolding events. The outcome of this meeting could have far-reaching implications for the leadership and governance of Indian sports.
