On Friday, British Hindus and Indians in the UK, under the banner of INSIGHT UK, protested outside the Oxford Union. They raised slogans in response to a debate hosted by the Union titled "This House Believes in the Independent State of Kashmir."
The demonstrators' screams of "It is known far and wide, Oxford Union stands on terrorists’ side" were heard as they denounced the debate's hosting by speakers who were allegedly connected to terrorism. In addition, Hindi slogans such as "Bharat mata ki jai, vande matram" were chanted by students carrying banners during the demonstration outside the Oxford Union. The protest's message was also shared by INSIGHT UK, which added, "Jammu Kashmir WAS India, Jammu Kashmir IS India, Jammu Kashmir WILL BE India."
In an official letter to the Oxford Union Society on Thursday, INSIGHT UK voiced concerns regarding the organisation's choice to hold a debate titled "This House Believes in the Independent State of Kashmir," questioning the inclusion of speakers who are allegedly connected to terrorism and pointing out possible threats to the debate's integrity. The two invited speakers, Zafar Khan and Muzzammil Ayyub Thakur, who supported the motion, were criticised for their alleged ties to organisations associated with terrorism and violent extremism, according to a letter from the social movement that addresses issues affecting the British Hindu and Indian community in the UK.
They also claimed that Muzzammil Ayyub is accused of inciting hate speech and allegedly associated with terrorist organisations, for which the investigation is underway. The background of Thakur and his organisations, Mercy Universal, which he co-founded with his father, and the World Kashmir Freedom Movement, of which he is president, were also highlighted by INSIGHT UK. The FBI, Charity Commission, and UK's Scotland Yard have reportedly looked into both organisations' possible ties to terrorist activity.
"Muzzammil Ayyub has often engaged in hate speech. A case has been registered against him for creating fear and alarm among the masses using social media and inclining them to commit offences likely to disturb public order. Muzammil has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act," read the letter. "Muzammil is the president of the "World Kashmir Freedom Movement," which, along with another organisation called "Mercy Universal," was founded by his father and investigated by Scotland Yard, the Charity Commission and the FBI for ties with terrorists," the letter further said.
Zafar Khan, Chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was linked to a group known for violent actions against the Kashmiri Hindu community. The JKLF was also involved in incidents like the 1984 kidnapping and killing of Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre in the UK, according to the letter. INSIGHT UK is a social movement focused on raising awareness, advocating, and campaigning for issues affecting the British Hindu and Indian communities in the United Kingdom.
