According to sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) expressed concern on Tuesday over recent violence in three border areas of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district and has sent in extra paramilitary forces as a precaution. Initial findings suggest that the violence may have been triggered by Bangladeshi miscreants, allegedly backed by local TMC leaders who later failed to control them. As a result, several Hindu families were forced to escape, with many seeking shelter in Malda. The situation has raised concerns about possible fresh infiltration and communal tensions.
Sources revealed that the Centre has asked the Mamata Banerjee-led state government to explain its failure in safeguarding lives and property, the attacks on railway infrastructure, and the lack of police response during the early phase of the violence. At the same time, BJP leaders have accused the TMC government of deliberately stirring communal tensions over the Waqf Bill to distract from the SSC recruitment scam, which has put the future of over 26,000 candidates at risk. They also claimed that the unrest reflects the growing sense of insecurity felt by Hindus under TMC's leadership.
The Union Home Ministry recently held a video conference with the West Bengal Chief Secretary and DGP to evaluate the situation and discuss law and order measures. At the same time, the Calcutta High Court on Saturday directed the deployment of Central Armed Forces in Murshidabad district, where protests against the Waqf Amendment Act had escalated into violence. The unrest broke out on April 12 and 13, 2025, in various parts of Murshidabad, including Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur, following demonstrations against the changes made to the Waqf Act.
