President's rule in Manipur has been extended for another six months, starting August 13, 2025, following a resolution moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to the Rajya Sabha parliamentary bulletin, "Amit Shah, Minister of Home Affairs, and Minister of Cooperation has laid notice of the following Resolution which has been admitted:- 'That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the 13th February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025'."
President's Rule was first enforced in the state on February 13, 2025, after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from office in response to the outbreak of ethnic violence.
Under Article 356(3) of the Constitution, President’s Rule is implemented through the Governor’s office and typically continues for six months. It can be extended with Parliament’s approval every six months for up to three years.
The ongoing ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which began on May 3, 2023, has led to the deaths of 250 people and forced over 60,000 residents to leave their homes.
National Highways 2 and 37, which are key routes connecting the landlocked Imphal valley to Nagaland and Assam, pass through areas populated by the Kuki-Zo community. Since the violence began, Meitei residents in the valley have not been able to access these roads.
In addition, more than 6,000 police weapons have been looted from different locations across the state.
