Russian President Vladimir Putin met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the Kremlin on Monday and discussed ways to further strengthen India-Russia relations. The talks covered several key areas, including trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation. The meeting highlighted the continued growth of the partnership between the two countries.

Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Putin during the meeting. He also handed over a personal message from the Indian prime minister to the Russian president. The meeting took place amid efforts by both countries to expand cooperation across several sectors.

Putin welcomed Jaishankar to Moscow and said his visit reflected the strength of the relationship between India and Russia. He pointed to the long history of cooperation between the two countries and said their ties had developed over several decades.

“I am very glad to see you, Mr Minister. Your visit today highlights the level of relations that have developed between Russia and India for decades,” Putin said, according to Sputnik.

Putin said India and Russia continued to work together through government, parliamentary and economic channels. He also noted that bilateral trade had continued to grow in 2026. According to Putin, cooperation between the two countries had expanded across “almost all areas”.

Jaishankar said the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission had recently held its meeting. He said the discussions gave a positive assessment of the progress in bilateral cooperation. He highlighted trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation as important areas of engagement between the two countries.

“Overall, I think our economic cooperation has grown very significantly,” Jaishankar said as he was quoted by media outlets. He added that India wants to expand cooperation, deepen economic engagement and increase collaboration in key areas.

Fertiliser supplies also featured prominently in the discussions. Putin said Russia was prepared to increase fertiliser supplies to India to support the country’s agricultural needs. He said Moscow was working to address the requirements of Indian farmers and was ready to provide additional supplies.

“We are doing everything to close this issue for Indian farmers and agriculture; we are increasing these supplies and we are ready to do this further,” Putin said, according to Sputnik.

Fertilisers remain an important part of India-Russia economic cooperation. Russia’s willingness to increase supplies is expected to support India’s agricultural sector and strengthen cooperation in the area.

The meeting also focused on upcoming engagements between Modi and Putin. Jaishankar conveyed Modi’s plans for further meetings with the Russian president. He said Modi looked forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit.

Jaishankar also said India would welcome Putin to the country for the BRICS Summit. The two leaders are also expected to hold their annual summit at a mutually convenient time. These planned meetings are set to maintain regular high-level engagement between India and Russia.

“We have a very strong picture of cooperation to present,” Jaishankar said, highlighting the continued momentum in bilateral ties.

The meeting at the Kremlin comes as India and Russia continue to expand cooperation in trade, energy, fertilisers, nuclear projects and other sectors. Both sides have also maintained regular political engagement at the highest level. The discussions between Putin and Jaishankar reaffirmed their focus on strengthening the partnership and expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest.
