President Droupadi Murmu has emphasised the need for "peaceful and stable relations" between India and China in a letter addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping. The letter, sent on September 27, marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Murmu expressed her hope for improved ties between the two neighbouring nations.

In her message, which was shared by Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong on X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu highlighted the importance of cooperation between India and China. "As two large neighbours with many common developmental challenges and shared regional interests, it is important that we work towards peaceful and stable relations between our two countries," Murmu said. She further expressed her eagerness to collaborate with Xi to build a mutually beneficial relationship for the well-being of both nations and the broader region.

Sources from Rashtrapati Bhavan explained that it is customary for the President of India to send greetings to the heads of state of other countries on their national days, a practice that has continued even amid the border tensions between India and China over the past five years. Murmu began her letter by extending warm wishes to President Xi and the Chinese people on the occasion, also wishing the Chinese leader good health and prosperity for the people of China.

The letter comes at a time when both nations have been engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which has strained relations since 2020. Several rounds of discussions have been held at diplomatic and political levels to address the issues along the LAC.

In response, the Chinese ambassador to India reiterated his country’s willingness to work with India to strengthen bilateral relations. Sharing President Murmu’s letter, Xu Feihong remarked, "President Droupadi Murmu sent her congratulatory message to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. China is ready to work with India to advance bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track."
