On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu stressed the importance of reforming major global organisations, like the United Nations Security Council, as soon as possible. She emphasised that these reforms should ensure that these bodies reflect the current global situation.
Philemon Yang, the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), recently visited President Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. During the meeting, she mentioned that 2025 will host key UN conferences, including the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development and the Third UN Ocean Conference, among others. Murmu promised Yang that India would actively and positively participate in these forums.
According to an official release, President Murmu emphasised the necessity of early and thorough reform of important multilateral organisations, such as the UN Security Council, to make them more representative of modern world reality. Murmu valued Yang's inclusive outlook and emphasis on scientific and data-driven approaches to sustainable development. At the Summit for the Future, which took place in New York in September 2024, she also praised his leadership in having the "Pact for the Future" adopted. She mentioned that India will keep supporting the interests of the Global South, especially at the United Nations, as driven by the faith of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," according to a statement from the President’s office.
“The two leaders also discussed the close and friendly bilateral relations between India and Cameroon, which have grown steadily over the years, especially in development partnership and capacity building,” read the statement. Yang is a politician from Cameroon. Murmu mentioned that India has a strong relationship with Africa, and it was during India's G20 Presidency in 2023 that the African Union became a permanent member of the group.
