resident Droupadi Murmu has accepted Union Minister L. Murugan's resignation with immediate effect, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An official from the President’s Secretariat confirmed the decision on Thursday under Article 75(2) of the Constitution of India.
Murugan, who served as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, had requested the Prime Minister to relieve him of his ministerial responsibilities. He also expressed his desire to quit his Rajya Sabha membership and focus full-time on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to Modi, Murugan said he wanted to return to grassroots politics and work alongside party workers across the state. He said the public enthusiasm and affection witnessed during the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu had strengthened his belief in the BJP’s potential in the state.
"Now, I wish to return to the grassroots, stand with our karyakartas and dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections," Murugan wrote in the letter shared on his official X account.
“Nation First. Party Next. Self Last," he added, describing the principle as the guiding force behind his nearly three-decade-long political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the BJP.
Murugan said he plans to visit every village and street, meet people and expand the party’s presence across Tamil Nadu. He also pledged to take Modi’s message of inclusive development to every person and encourage families to contribute to the vision of a developed India.
Reflecting on his tenure in the Union government, Murugan described it as the greatest honour of his life. He recalled his humble beginnings as the son of daily wage labourers. His parents also worked as cattle grazers and continued to lead a simple life in Konur village.
