Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the residence of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), in Islamabad to express his desire to form a political alliance with the JUI-F. Sources privy to the development revealed that the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of cooperation between the two parties, highlighting their past collaborations.
"We want to work together again, just like we did in the past," PM Shehbaz Sharif was quoted as saying during the meeting. "We request you to guide us once more." However, Maulana Fazlur Rehman responded by reiterating his party's stance, which remains unchanged. "We are where we were in the past, you have changed your path," the JUI-F chief replied, suggesting a distance between the two parties.
Sources within JUI-F indicated that a clear and straightforward message was conveyed to the Prime Minister. Despite the differences in political stance, the meeting was conducted in a cordial and respectful atmosphere. PM Shehbaz Sharif also took the opportunity to inquire about Maulana Fazlur Rehman's health and well-being, showing a personal touch in his approach.
This meeting is significant, coming shortly after President Asif Ali Zardari also held talks with the JUI-F chief on August 24. These high-level discussions were preceded by a delegation from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) visiting Maulana Fazlur Rehman on August 23, seeking cooperation. According to ARY News, the PTI delegation was looking to rebuild ties and work collaboratively with JUI-F.
Sources have indicated that both parties, the government, and JUI-F, are exploring possibilities of ending their differences and finding common ground for collaboration. During the meeting, there were discussions about forming committees to facilitate joint efforts. The PTI delegation reportedly proposed in-house cooperation within the Parliament, expressing the view that a combined effort could provide significant opposition to the government.
These developments highlight the dynamic and evolving nature of Pakistan's political landscape, where major political parties are considering alliances and support to strengthen their positions. The ongoing discussions reflect an attempt to realign political forces as they navigate the country's complex political environment.
